Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, is charting a new path for mountain and outdoor sports, turning rock climbing into a catalyst for growth across fitness, tourism, and culture.
Set on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, the city's karst landscapes and mild climate provide ideal conditions for climbing and other outdoor activities. Guiyang has built a series of high-profile events and training bases that draw athletes and enthusiasts from around the world.
World-class venues such as the Guizhou Caihu International Climbing Center in Guanshanhu Park and the Climbing Gym at Qingzhen Sports Training Base have raised the bar for professional training while popularizing the sport among residents.
Guiyang is also pushing sports integration with tourism, culture and commerce by improving public fitness facilities, promoting smart fitness platforms, and developing branded events. The new "Run Guiyang" initiative, led by the Guiyang Marathon, extends into off-road racing, paragliding, cycling, and other mountain sports. Supporting activities, such as themed routes, sports parks, cross-sector promotions, and live music events, are creating a dynamic model where sports, tourism, and culture thrive together.
