On June 29, the sounds of lively Bouyei folk songs filled Pianpo Bouyei township in Wudang district, Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, as locals celebrated "Liuyueliu" – one of the Bouyei people's most important traditional festivals.

The day featured a variety of festive activities, including a countryside walk with intangible cultural heritage checkpoints, a quiz on local agricultural specialties with prizes, a welcoming wine-drinking ceremony, bamboo pole dancing, and making sticky rice cakes. The events attracted both tourists and villagers alike.

"Liuyueliu" falls on the sixth day of the sixth month of the Chinese calendar, originating from the Bouyei people's farming traditions, and is often referred to as their "Little New Year".

Recognized as one of China's first batches of "distinctive ethnic group villages" and a "beautiful leisure village", Pianpo Bouyei township is renowned for its stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage. The township has, in recent years, promoted rural tourism through agritainment, summer retreats, and ethnic creative industries. In 2024 alone, it welcomed 161,000 visits and generated 18.4 million yuan in tourism revenue.

The township will continue to utilize the "Liuyueliu" festival as a platform to showcase its natural beauty, ethnic culture, and agricultural traditions, offering visitors immersive experiences and injecting new energy into local tourism.
