The launch ceremony of the Guiyang City and Gui'an New Area Sports Campaign for Teachers and Students – along with the opening ceremony of the 13th Guiyang Primary and Secondary School Student Games – took place on May 23.
In recent years, Guiyang – capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province – has implemented the national fitness plan.
It's been keen to promote the all-around development of morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics and labor among the city's primary and secondary school students, leading to a comprehensive enhancement of their overall quality of life.
Over the past year, Guiyang's young athletes have achieved great success. They won 32 gold, 32 silver and 16 bronze medals at the first National Student (Youth) Games held in November.
The ongoing 13th Guiyang Primary and Secondary School Student Games – whose competitions will run to late July – are said to showcase the athletic prowess and spirit of the city's students.
The games include competitions in soccer, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, badminton, tennis, athletics, jump rope, fencing, aerobics and swimming.
Notably, this year's soccer matches have introduced a home and away game system for the first time – increasing the number of matches and fostering a vibrant campus soccer culture.
Moving forwards, plans are for Guiyang and Gui'an to continue to promote school sports activities – providing more platforms for youth sports exchanges and competitions.
