The preliminary competition of the climbing event's open group – of the first Student (Youth) Games of the People's Republic of China – was held at the Qingzhen Sports Training Base from Aug 23 to 26. A total of 140 athletes qualified for the final. The national final will be held in Guangxi province in November.

A total of 231 players from 23 provinces and cities participated in the preliminary round.

The first Student (Youth) Games of the People's Republic of China compared the Olympic Games in Paris 2024 and Los Angeles 2028, and was divided into campus and open groups. The open group competition will train and reserve talent for the Olympic Games.

The climbing program limits athletes to ages 12 to 15, giving them a chance to compete in the qualifying trials of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2027.

The Qingzhen Sports Training Base in Southwest China's Guizhou province is a national sub-plateau comprehensive training base. It is also the designated training base of the Chinese Athletics Association, Chinese Shooting Association, Chinese Boxing Association, national climbing team, and national youth gymnastics team.

The base provides sports training, sports rehabilitation training, and other sports-related services.
