Guiyang releases five-year plan for sports development

Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, recently released its special plan for the development of sports during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25). 

The plan put forward detailed goals in terms of the integration of mass fitness and health, improvement of competitive sports, high-quality development of the sports industry, integration of sports and tourism, sports culture exchange, and the balanced development of Guiyang and nearby Guian New Area. 

By the end of 2025, the city seeks to increase the proportion of people who regularly participate in physical exercise to 45 percent; increase the per capita sporting area to 2.6 square meters; increase the amount of urban and rural residents who have passed the "National Physical Fitness Standard" to over 92.5 percent of the total population; and increase the number of social sports instructors per 1,000 people to three. 

Guiyang will seek to develop over 60 schools with traditional sports characteristics and 10 reserve centers of outstanding sporting talent, increase the total output value of the sports industry to 16 billion yuan ($2.52 billion), and the added value of the industry to more than 6 billion yuan. 

The city also aims to become an international mountain sports tourism destination and international cultural exchange center for Chinese chess on the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor. 

To achieve these goals, Guiyang has initiated seven major projects focusing on the construction of sports venues and facilities, cultivation of sporting talent, development of social sports organizations, promotion of youth sports and e-sports, the integration of sports and tourism, and rural revitalization via sports.
