Guiyang, the capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, has been accelerating the construction of city parks, aiming to complete 1,000 parks within five years.
So far, 15 ecological sports parks have been built in the city, addressing the shortage of sports facilities while expanding sports, fitness and leisure space for residents.
In 2019, the city's per capita sports area was 1.94 square meters, increasing from 1.5 sq m in 2016. The increased fitness space has helped promote the national fitness program among Guiyang residents.
Among the 15 ecological sports parks, six were constructed with government funds totaling 3.30 billion yuan ($510.18 million). The other nine were built with social capital of 13.82 billion yuan.
The construction of ecological sports parks was integrated into forest parks, wetland parks, mountain parks, urban parks, community parks, and more. These parks highlight different sports themes and characteristics, including sports training, fitness and leisure, parent-child sports, extreme sports and motorsports.
According to incomplete statistics, in the past three years, Guanshan Lake ecological sports park, Denggao Yunshan ecological sports park and Guishan Mountain sports park have held as many as 1,100 fitness activities, attracting 336,000 participants.
